Battleground for Lok Sabha: Key Political Parties – YSR Congress

Background

YSR congress is a new regional political party formed by Jagan Reddy, son of YSR Reddy, former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. After death of his father in a helicopter crash, Jagan staked claim for Chief Ministership, Congress ignored his claim. Jagan split the party though he could not bring down the govt. It is alleged that Congress framed Jagan in disproportionate asset case and he was in jail for a year or so. He recently got bail. Jagan has been a strong advocator of united Andhra and has opposed the creation of Telangana state. This has earned him huge support in Seemandhra region. He has also gained people sympathy as many believe false cases were imposed on him to frame him.

The entire wealth he is accused of amassing could not have been done without support / knowlegde of Congress central leadership. Its just that his father was very strong leader and Congress ignored Jagan’s extravagant ways till he was alive. The party had 17 MLAs in the recently dissolved 295 member Andhra assembly.

Prospects in 2014 elections

Polls predict that YSR Congress along with TDP will sweep Seemandhra (25 seats) and sink Congress prospects in the state. This was also one of the main reasons for Congress going ahead and creating Telangana as they saw they could not win a single seat in Seemandhra. Politicalbaaba estimates 14 seats for Jagan in Lok Sabha. He openly said that he would support Modi if BJP backs united Andhra. Given his animosity with Congress, he might support a NDA govt. at the center post polls, given BJP doesn’t have any understanding with Chandrababu Naidu.
