PB’s twisty take on the top five headlines of the day.

1. Rajan for new global pact to deal with monetary policy issues

Raghuram Rajan this time speaks of setting the world right, not setting the Indian economy right. He does not inform us how the world came to this pass. It all started with the discredited Bretton Woods. The main currency for settlement of transactions was accepted as USdollar, with the US promising to exchange the currency for gold at the rate of $35 per ounce. But the US reneged and the world was tossed into a long lasting crisis. Today gold is $1244.5 an ounce. Rajan seems to write a prescription before the diagnosis.

2. Cong takes dig at Naidu’s flattering chant of Modi

Moving the political resolution at the just concluded BJP national executive here yesterday, Naidu hailed Modi as a “God’s gift to India” and a messiah for the poor. Congress related it to Dev Kant Baruah’s “India is Indira and Indira is India” remark for which he was castigated.

3. Tamil Nadu Assembly elections: Talks on with DMDK, says Karunanidhi

Giving a new twist to the political scenario in the state days after the Vijayakanth-led party announced it would go it alone. Besides the DMK, BJP and four party bloc People’s Welfare Front continue to woo the DMDK.

4. Uttarakhand crisis: Cong expels ex-CM Bahuguna’s son for rebellion

Who is spearheading a rebel camp in the party that has threatened to form the state government with the BJP’s support. A lot of Congress ministers are changing sides recently, will the family raj end soon?
