Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is a regional political party in Andhra Pradesh. It was formed in 1982 by N.T. Rama Rao (NTR). NTR was a famous actor of Telugu cinema. The party has been in government in Andhra Pradesh thrice from 1984-89, 1994-99, 1999-2004. N. Chandrababu Naidu (son-in-law) of NTR took control of the party after his demise in 1995. TDP is credited with making Hyderabad (state capital), the IT city of the country. The party was formed on an anti Congress plank and registered its best performance in 1984 (after Indira Gandhi’s death) when it won 32 seats.
The party has opposed the creation of Telangana and thus is strong in Seemandhra region. YSR Congress led by Jagan Reddy is its main competitor in the region. The party is tipped to enter into a pre-poll alliance with BJP for Lok Sabha elections. The Congress performed really well in 2004 & 09 Lok Sabha under YSR Reddy and this has weakened TDP in the state.

Prospects in Lok Sabha 2014
Jagan Reddy is giving a tough fight to TDP in 25 seats of Seemandhra. As it has opposed the creation of Telangana, it won’t get any seats there. Infact, the party has tied up with Telangana Rashtriya Samiti for 2009 polls. It has hardened its stance over Telangana because of YSR Congress. The party is likely to announce a pre-poll tie up with BJP. Opinion polls predict anywhere between 5-15 seats for TDP. As per Politicalbaaba they are likely to get 10 seats.
