Orissa

Orissa, an Eastern state, sends 21 MPs to Lok Sabha and will play a big role in next govt. formation. Biju Janata Dal (BJD), a regional party and an offshoot of erstwhile of Janata Dal, led by Naveen Patnaik has been in power in the state for the last 13 years. Earlier BJD had an alliance with the BJP. This alliance was broken in 2009. Congress also has a sizeable presence in the state.

The state is amongst the most backward states of India. Though, it is rich in mineral resources, industrial projects by Arcelor Mittal, Posco, Vedanta etc. have been stuck for years now. Naveen has a crystal clean image but that is not helping the state, development is low.  Three cornered contest is tricky.  Piggybacking BJD for so many years has hurt BJP as it doesn’t have a tall leader in the state.
